Damen and Alewijnse Launch New Generation of Offshore Support Tugs

In a significant move for the offshore energy sector, Damen Shipyards and electrical systems integrator Alewijnse have announced the commencement of construction for two next-generation multi-purpose offshore support tugs. The project, a collaboration with Chomex Marino and Woodside, reached a major milestone last month with a steel-cutting ceremony at the Damen Albwardy facility in the United Arab Emirates.

Advanced Specifications for Deepwater Operations

These ultra-powerful vessels are designed to meet the rigorous demands of deepwater operations in the Gulf of Mexico. Measuring 67 metres in length with an 18-metre beam, the tugs represent the largest offshore tugboats Alewijnse has integrated to date. They are engineered for high-performance capability, boasting a 120-tonne bollard pull in both ahead and astern directions.

The design prioritizes versatility, featuring 250m² of free deck space and Class 2 Dynamic Positioning (DP2) performance. This ensures the vessels can maintain stability and operational efficiency even in the severe offshore conditions typical of deep-sea environments.

Multi-Mission Capabilities

Beyond traditional towing, these vessels are equipped to handle a diverse range of maritime tasks, including:

  • Handling mooring lines and cargo hoses for tanker assistance.
  • Supporting tandem offloading operations and hose maintenance.
  • Deploying Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs).
  • Providing oil spill response and standby services.
  • Managing bulk cargo and crew transfers for supply missions.

Sustainability and Electrical Innovation

A key highlight of this project is the integration of eco-friendly technology. The vessels will feature electric propulsion capabilities, significantly reducing their environmental footprint during delicate operations. Alewijnse is responsible for the complete electrical engineering and system integration, including the implementation of the Van Meer multi-drive propulsion system and high-spec switchboards.

A Strategic Global Partnership

The collaboration underscores the long-standing relationship between Damen and Alewijnse. By leveraging Alewijnse’s global presence, the project benefits from seamless support across the Middle East during construction and lifecycle services—including warranty support—once the vessels arrive at their destination in Mexico.

With engineering well underway, the construction phase is set to accelerate this spring. The maritime industry anticipates the delivery of these state-of-the-art vessels in the fourth quarter of 2027, marking a new era of efficiency for offshore construction and energy support.
