Sea Freight to and from Cyprus

FCL and LCL through Limassol — booked, shipped, cleared and delivered by one desk, from a forwarder that is also a container line's agent.

Nearly everything Cyprus imports and exports crosses a quay at Limassol, and sea freight is the trade's workhorse: containers to and from Europe, Israel, the USA, the Far East and everywhere a transhipment hub reaches. Shoham has forwarded that trade since 1951, and represents ZIM Integrated Shipping Services in Cyprus — which means one desk here is both a forwarder that can book any suitable carrier and the local agency of a line with scheduled services through Limassol.

That combination is worth naming plainly: as a forwarder we route your cargo by whichever service suits it, and as a line's agent we control more of the journey than a booking portal does — equipment, documentation and a person to call when something at the port needs unsticking.

How your cargo ships

FCL — Full Container Load

Your cargo, your container, sealed at origin and opened at destination. The right answer once volume approaches what a box holds, and for anything where the cargo should not share air with strangers' freight — foodstuffs near chemicals being the classic argument.

LCL — consolidation

Your cargo shares a container and pays for the space it uses. The economics suit smaller consignments; the trade-off is the consolidation itself — the box waits to fill at origin and is unpacked at a depot at destination, so LCL buys a lower price with a longer and less predictable door-to-door time. We say so up front rather than letting the quote imply otherwise.

Reefer and special equipment

Temperature-controlled boxes for perishables and pharma, open tops and flat racks for what will not fit through container doors. Anything genuinely out of gauge moves to our project cargo desk, which is its own discipline.

Vehicles and personal effects

Cars from the UK and Europe are their own trade with their own page — duty, registration and the transfer-of-residence relief matter more than the freight. Household moves ride as FCL or groupage depending on volume.

Oversized or heavy-lift moves belong with project cargo; cars from the UK have their own page.

Freight and customs on one file

The part of sea freight that actually delays cargo in Cyprus is rarely the sailing — it is what happens at the quay. Shoham is a customs clearing agent as well as a forwarder, so the entry, duty and VAT, and any inspection are handled by the same file that booked the box. Importers get one invoice and one point of accountability; there is no gap between "the forwarder's job" and "the broker's job" for a container to fall into.

Exports run the same way in reverse — export formalities, certificates, bills of lading and the booking, together. For import duty questions, the duty calculator gives a working estimate before you commit to a purchase.

Frequently asked questions

Should I ship FCL or LCL?

By volume, roughly: a few pallets is LCL territory; approaching half a container's worth, price FCL as well, because the crossover comes earlier than most shippers expect once LCL's per-unit charges and depot fees are counted. Beyond price, FCL is sealed door to door while LCL is consolidated and deconsolidated — if schedule reliability or cargo isolation matters, that is worth more than the difference in freight.

How long does sea freight to Cyprus take?

It depends on the origin, the routing and whether the box transships, and any single number we printed here would be wrong for half the enquiries reading it. What we will do is quote the actual current transit for your route alongside the rate — and, where a transhipment adds a week of variability, tell you that too. For scheduled ZIM services, the weekly sailing schedule is published on this site.

Do you handle the customs clearance as well?

Yes, and on the same file. Shoham is a customs clearing agent as well as a forwarder, so the import does not change hands at the quay — the entry, any duty and VAT, and inspections are handled by the desk that booked the freight. For exports the logic runs in reverse: export formalities, certificates and the bill of lading in one place.

Can you quote door-to-door?

Yes. Sea freight is the middle of the journey, not the whole of it — collection at origin, haulage in Cyprus and delivery to the final address can all go on the same quotation. Tell us the two postcodes and what the cargo is, and the quote covers the journey rather than the port pair.

How do I get a rate?

The freight rate calculator on this site gives an instant indication for common routes, and a request through the quote page gets a firm rate against your actual cargo, dates and terms. For regular volumes, ask about contract rates — a shipper moving boxes every month should not be paying spot every month.

Can I track my container?

Yes — by container number or bill of lading through the container tracking page. For ZIM shipments the tracking runs against the line's own system, which we can also chase from the agency side when a box goes quiet.

Price a shipment

The freight rate calculator gives an instant indication; a quote request gets a firm rate against your cargo and dates. Either way, tell us the commodity and both ends of the journey — the honest answer to "how much and how long" depends on both.
