India’s premier private sector shipping company, Great Eastern Shipping (GE Shipping), is accelerating its fleet renewal program with the strategic divestment of its older tanker assets. The Mumbai-listed shipowner recently confirmed agreements to sell two Medium Range (MR) product tankers as part of its ongoing efforts to modernize its fleet and optimize operational efficiency.
\n\nStrategic Divestment of Older Tonnage
\nThe latest vessels scheduled for departure from the Great Eastern fleet are the 2007-built Jag Prakash (48,000 dwt) and the 2003-built Jag Panhki (46,000 dwt). While the financial specifics of these transactions remain undisclosed, the move aligns with the company’s broader objective of reducing the average age of its waterborne assets.
\n\nA Multi-Sector Fleet Overhaul
\nThis offloading of vintage tonnage is balanced by a series of high-quality acquisitions. The company has been active in the secondhand market, recently securing newer vessels to maintain its competitive edge in the global energy trade. Notable recent activities include:
\n- \n
- The acquisition of a 49,420 dwt MR tanker built in 2014. \n
- The purchase of the 2013-built MR2 tanker Jag Pranesh for approximately $30 million. \n
- An agreement to acquire a secondhand Kamsarmax bulk carrier to bolster its dry bulk segment. \n
Current Fleet Capability
\nFollowing these transactions, Great Eastern Shipping maintains a robust presence in both the liquid and dry bulk markets. The current fleet stands at 40 vessels, comprising 26 tankers and 14 bulk carriers, representing a combined capacity of approximately 3.2 million dwt.
\nBy shedding older, less efficient units and integrating mid-age, high-specification tonnage, GE Shipping is positioning itself to better navigate the evolving regulatory landscape of the maritime industry, particularly regarding emission standards and fuel efficiency. This fleet reshuffle highlights a disciplined approach to capital allocation, ensuring that the company remains resilient amidst fluctuating market cycles.
