Peter Döhle Bolsters Container Fleet with Newbuilding Order in China

Peter Döhle Bolsters Container Fleet with Newbuilding Order in China

The Hamburg-based shipping powerhouse, Peter Döhle Schiffahrts, is continuing its aggressive fleet renewal program with a fresh order for feeder container vessels in China. According to recent shipbuilding reports, the German owner has finalized a contract with Chengxi Shipyard, a subsidiary of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), for the construction of two 3,100 teu newbuildings.

Strategic Investment in Feeder Capacity

The deal, valued at approximately $48 million per vessel, highlights a strategic focus on high-specification regional tonnage. These new units will feature significant refrigerated cargo capabilities, equipped with 900 reefer plugs each to meet the rising demand for temperature-controlled logistics. Delivery for both vessels is currently slated for 2029.

This latest agreement marks a notable diversification for the Jiangsu-based Chengxi Shipyard. While the yard has traditionally been recognized for its expertise in bulk carriers and specialized vessel classes, this contract underscores its growing competitiveness in the container segment.

Ongoing Fleet Expansion Program

The order at Chengxi is just the latest chapter in Peter Döhle’s sustained vessel acquisition strategy across Chinese shipyards. The company has maintained a steady momentum in contracting new tonnage over the past year:

  • Feedermax Segment: In 2023, the owner commissioned four 2,900 teu vessels at CSSC Guangzhou Huangpu Wenchong, with deliveries expected between late 2027 and 2028.
  • Mid-Size Vessels: The company is also linked to a series of five 8,400 teu LNG dual-fuel containerships currently under development at Guangzhou Shipyard International.
  • Ultra-Large Capacity: Earlier in 2024, Döhle broke a nine-year hiatus in large-scale newbuild programs by ordering four 14,000 teu vessels at Hudong-Zhonghua.

A Global Shipping Leader

With a controlled fleet of over 300 tramp-owned containerships, Peter Döhle remains a pivotal player in the global maritime industry. This latest move to secure 3,100 teu units suggests a forward-looking approach to fleet modernization, ensuring their capacity remains competitive and technologically advanced as environmental regulations and market demands evolve toward the end of the decade.
