From Classroom Dreams to Concrete Realities
Twenty‑eight years ago two young Chinese students arrived in Cyprus, eager to study and explore the Mediterranean island. Little did they know that the island would become both their home and the launchpad for a venture that would intertwine the destinies of Cyprus and China.
Early Steps: Language, Tourism and Hospitality
John Che Huali and Judy Wang Xiaoyu first entered the Cypriot workforce as official state translators, gaining a deep understanding of the island’s tourism sector. Their fluency in both Mandarin and Greek enabled them to become certified tour guides and later to establish a travel agency that linked Chinese visitors with Cyprus’s historic sites and resorts.
Recognising a culinary gap, the couple opened two Chinese restaurants—one in Nicosia and another in Limassol. The eateries quickly became cultural meeting points, drawing locals and expatriates alike and fostering informal exchanges that would later underpin their larger community initiatives.
Founding TopCy Development
In 2019, the pair founded TopCy Development, a Class A construction firm. Within a decade the company has delivered more than 60 residential and commercial projects across Nicosia, Limassol and Larnaca, recorded 217 property sales, and assisted over 150 Chinese families in making Cyprus their new home.
Beyond Construction: Community Commitment
- Cyprus Chinese Overseas Friendship and Solidarity Association: As president, Che Huali organises sports events, cultural festivals and carnival participation to deepen Sino‑Cypriot ties.
- Apple Gym: A state‑of‑the‑art sports centre on the outskirts of Nicosai that serves nearly 1,000 children daily, reflecting the founders’ gratitude to their adopted country.
- Ongoing Travel Services: Their agency continues to bring dozens of Chinese tour groups to Cyprus each year, creating pathways for tourism spending and potential investment.
Recognition and Future Outlook
John Che Huali’s role as the official representative of the Chinese community at national celebrations has underscored the growing prominence of the Sino‑Cypriot partnership. With a proven track record in construction, trade (including imports of stone and quartz), and community building, the couple is well positioned to expand their portfolio and further solidify economic bridges between the two nations.
As Cyprus seeks to diversify its trade routes and attract Asian investment, stories like that of TopCy Development illustrate the tangible benefits of cultural integration and entrepreneurial spirit.
