Shipping an electric or hybrid car
Full electric (BEV), plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and hybrid (HEV) cars ship with extra safety checks set by the shipping line. Mild hybrids with a 12–48 V battery are exempt and ship like a petrol or diesel car.
- RoRo only. The car must drive on and off the ship under its own power. Electric and hybrid cars can't go in a container, and a non-running one can't be shipped.
- Booked before drop-off. The line accepts every electric car in writing before it reaches the port. Send us the make and model, the VIN, the type (BEV, PHEV or HEV) and the battery type — usually lithium-ion, as shown in the handbook.
- Battery charged to 20–50%. Aim for about 35%. A car outside that range is refused for loading. The 12 V battery must be well charged too.
- Good condition. No accident damage, no leaks and no warning lights on the dashboard, with the charging cable in the boot.
- A sign in the windscreen saying BEV, PHEV or HEV, readable from outside the car.
- An inspection report. Bring your own, or ask us to arrange one from a licensed garage or dealer, on its letterhead, signed and stamped, done no more than 10–15 days before loading. It confirms the electric system, charging system and charging port work, with no leaks, no damage to the battery pack and no warning lights, and it states the battery charge and battery health as percentages (for example “charge 35%, health 92%”) — “OK” or “within range” is not accepted. Have it done just before you drop the car off and drive straight there: a car used on the road after its inspection needs a new one.
- Low cars. The battery sits under the floor, so tell us the ground clearance before we book, to keep it clear of the ship's ramps.
- Handbook pages, if you have them: the transport-mode and towing instructions and the rescue sheet for emergency services.
The line may keep the car on the quay for up to 72 hours to check it before loading. A car that does not meet these rules is refused, and the line can charge the costs this causes.
Taxes on a car from Ireland
Customs duty — none: Ireland and Cyprus are both EU members (the T2L proves it).
Excise duty — paid on registration in Cyprus, based mainly on CO2 emissions.
VAT — only if the car counts as new (generally up to 6 months old or 6,000 km).
Registration fees — paid to the Road Transport Department.

Which ports do you ship from in Ireland?
Cork and Rosslare Europort. You drop the car at the port and we take care of the booking, the export paperwork and the T2L. Collection from your address can be arranged on request.
Can I ship an Irish right-hand drive car to Cyprus?
Yes. Cyprus drives on the left like Ireland, so right-hand drive cars are the norm. Once the car is cleared, it has to be registered with Cyprus plates.
What documents do I need?
The Irish Vehicle Registration Certificate (VRC), proof of ownership or the purchase invoice, and your passport or ID. If you are moving to Cyprus, proof of your change of residence can reduce the taxes on registration — we'll tell you what applies.
