Handysize Fleet Faces Contraction

The Handysize segment, known for its resilience and flexibility, is facing a structural shift.

Ageing Fleet Profile

Nearly 50% of the global Handysize fleet is over 15 years old, with 18% over 20 years old.

Replacement Challenge

The scale of ageing tonnage creates a structural replacement challenge, with a considerable share of the current 15-20-year-old fleet moving into the 20+ age bracket.

  • 5% of the Handysize fleet is operating beyond its usual demolition age range.
  • The orderbook-to-fleet ratio stands at only around 2%, the lowest among other segments.

Insufficient Replacement Tonnage

Scheduled deliveries over the next five years remain insufficient to offset the replacement of vessels approaching their demolition age.

Demolitions have steadily increased, reflecting the growing pressure from ageing tonnage, while annual vessel deliveries have trended lower.
