Himalaya Shipping Secures New Premium Charter for Newcastlemax Vessel

Oslo-listed dry bulk specialist Himalaya Shipping has announced the successful securing of a new charter agreement for the Mount Matterhorn, one of its state-of-the-art dual-fuel Newcastlemax vessels. The deal underscores the continued demand for high-specification, fuel-efficient tonnage in the current maritime landscape.

Strategic Charter Overview

The 2023-built vessel, which boasts a significant capacity of 210,000 dwt, is set to enter its new employment phase in the second half of March. This transition follows the completion of its current charter obligations. According to the company, the new agreement is scheduled to last between 12 and 14 months, providing the owner with stable medium-term employment for the asset.

In a move to maximize revenue potential, the charter is linked to the Baltic Exchange Capesize 5TC Index. Himalaya Shipping confirmed that the vessel will earn a substantial premium over this industry benchmark. Additionally, the contract provides flexibility for the charterer, including an option to convert the index-linked rate into a fixed rate based on the prevailing Forward Freight Agreement (FFA) curves.

Fleet Capabilities and Performance

Himalaya Shipping has rapidly established itself as a premier Newcastlemax specialist. The company’s fleet currently consists of 12 LNG dual-fuel vessels, all delivered between 2023 and 2024. These modern assets are under the technical management of industry leaders OSM Thome and Wilhelmsen Ship Management.

Key Financial Highlights:

  • Average Earnings: In February, the company reported average time charter equivalent (TCE) earnings of approximately $32,400 per day.
  • Scrubber Benefits: Earnings included a contribution of roughly $1,200 per day from scrubber utilization.
  • Index-Linked Success: While fixed-rate charters earned roughly $29,400 per day, index-linked vessels outperformed, averaging $34,500 per day.

The Tor Olav Troim-backed company continues to benefit from its strategic focus on high-efficiency vessels. By utilizing dual-fuel technology and maintaining a young fleet, Himalaya Shipping remains well-positioned to capitalize on a volatile but rewarding dry bulk market.
