Historic Cammell Laird Shipyard to be Renamed
Cammell Laird, one of the most famous names in British shipbuilding, is set to disappear after nearly 200 years. The historic Birkenhead shipyard on the River Mersey will be renamed Balaena Birkenhead as part of a wider rebranding programme.
Background
The move follows the acquisition of APCL Group, which operates Cammell Laird, by maritime engineering and shipbuilding company Balaena. The deal brings together five shipyards and 12 dry docks, creating a network of facilities across the UK and Gibraltar.
History of Cammell Laird
Cammell Laird has a rich history, dating back to the early 19th century. The shipyard has built hundreds of naval and commercial vessels, including warships, merchant ships, ferries, and submarines. More recently, it gained international recognition for constructing the polar research vessel RRS Sir David Attenborough.
Rebranding Programme
The rebranding programme will see all shipyards within the newly enlarged group renamed under the Balaena brand. This move is expected to create a unified and strong presence in the maritime industry.
