Danish shipping major Norden is strategically expanding its fleet capabilities through a significant move into the ice-class segment. The Copenhagen-listed operator has finalized a long-term Contract of Affreightment (COA) with the prominent Swedish mining group LKAB, signaling a deeper commitment to specialized maritime logistics.

Strategic Long-Term Partnership with LKAB

The newly signed agreement spans up to ten years and focuses on the transportation of bentonite from Greece to Northern Sweden. By securing this decade-long commitment, Norden aligns itself with its broader corporate strategy of cultivating stable, contract-backed earnings while diversifying its service offerings in niche markets.

Jan Rindbo, CEO of Norden, emphasized that this partnership not only secures consistent business but also provides a platform for growth in challenging geographical regions. The deal effectively links cargo demand with specialized assets, reducing exposure to spot market volatility.

Investment in High-Specification Newbuilds

To support the requirements of the LKAB contract, Norden has placed an order for two 23,000 dwt multipurpose vessels with Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group in China. These vessels are designed to operate in demanding environmental conditions and include several advanced technical features:
