ONE Expands Global Port Footprint with Stake in Thai Container Terminal

Ocean Network Express (ONE), the Singapore-based container shipping giant, has officially finalized a share purchase agreement to acquire a 30% stake in Hutchison Laemchabang Terminal Limited (HLT) in Thailand. This strategic move marks another significant step in the carrier’s aggressive expansion into terminal ownership, utilizing capital reserves accumulated over the past several years of strong market performance.

Strengthening the Southeast Asian Hub

The acquisition focuses on a primary gateway for Thailand’s international trade. By securing a minority stake in HLT, ONE ensures greater operational control and priority for its vessel services in the region. This deal follows closely on the heels of a similar move in South Korea, where the company recently acquired a stake in a terminal in Busan, indicating a clear pattern of securing "anchor" positions in key Asian hubs.

Hiroki Tsujii, Global Chief Officer of ONE’s Product and Network Division, highlighted the benefits of the transaction for the carrier’s global customer base. He noted that the deepened partnership with Hutchison Ports would lead to enhanced reliability and more efficient supply chain solutions within this vital trade corridor.

Strategic Alignment for ONE and Hutchison

For ONE, the investment is part of a broader "Green Strategy" and long-term business plan aimed at vertical integration. Owning terminal assets allows liners to mitigate the risks of port congestion and manage berthing windows more effectively, which translates to better schedule integrity.

On the other side of the transaction, Hutchison Ports has been actively evaluating its global portfolio. The divestment of a minority stake in the Laem Chabang facility aligns with its recent trend of streamlining operations and adjusting its asset distribution across international markets.

Industry Implications

The move by ONE underscores a continuing trend in the maritime industry where major container lines are transitioning from mere port users to port owners. This integration provides:

  • Dedicated capacity for the carrier’s growing fleet.
  • Improved service stability for regional shippers.
  • Enhanced synergy between vessel operations and land-side logistics.

While the financial details of the transaction remain confidential, the acquisition is expected to streamline ONE’s operations in Southeast Asia immediately, providing a robust platform for future growth in the Thai market.
