Singapore-based maritime powerhouse Purus has signaled its continued confidence in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) market by exercising an optional newbuild slot at South Korean shipyard Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI). The move underscores the company’s aggressive fleet expansion strategy and its commitment to modernizing global gas transport infrastructure.
\n\nStrategic Newbuild Expansion
\nThe latest contract involves a sophisticated 174,000 cubic meter LNG carrier, valued at approximately KRW 377.9 billion ($252 million). According to regulatory disclosures from the South Korean yard, the vessel is slated for delivery in the second quarter of 2029. While the shipbuilder refrained from naming the client in official filings, industry sources and shipbrokers have confirmed that the order belongs to Purus, representing an option exercised from an agreement established in late 2025.
\n\nThis development follows an initial $503 million deal for two sister ships, also placed at Samsung Heavy Industries. With the addition of this latest vessel, Purus continues to solidify its partnership with top-tier Korean shipyards to secure long-term capacity in a competitive market.
\n\nA Diversified Gas Fleet
\nPurus has rapidly emerged as a key player in the specialized gas carrier segment. Beyond its growing LNG portfolio, the company maintains a diverse fleet across several energy sectors, including:
\n- \n
- Ammonia (LPG/NH3 carriers) \n
- Ethane \n
- LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) \n
The company currently has over 20 vessels under management, with a steady pipeline of deliveries scheduled over the next four years. In addition to the SHI projects, Purus also has an 180,000 cubic meter LNG carrier under construction at Hyundai Heavy Industries, which is expected to join the fleet in December 2027 at a valuation of $262 million.
\n\nMarket Outlook
\nThis series of investments reflects a broader trend within the maritime industry toward newer, more efficient vessels capable of meeting stringent environmental regulations. By securing berths for 2029 delivery, Purus is positioning itself to manage the rising global demand for cleaner transition fuels. For the Cyprus maritime community and international logistics stakeholders, such significant fleet expansions indicate a robust long-term outlook for the global energy trade.
