Greek Owner Expands Container Fleet at Hengli Shipbuilding
Thenamaris, one of Greece’s leading shipping groups, has placed an order for four new 3,200‑TEU containerships with China’s Hengli Shipbuilding. The vessels, slated for delivery in 2028, represent a notable shift for the group, which has focused primarily on dry‑bulk and tanker projects in recent years.

Strategic significance
The order expands Thenamaris’ container exposure dramatically. Its ConBulk arm currently operates 24 bulk carriers and only two containerships. Adding a quartet of 3,200‑TEU boxships pushes the group’s container fleet to six vessels, underscoring a renewed confidence in the mid‑size container market.
In parallel, the relationship with Hengli deepens. Earlier this year, Thenamaris signed for three LR2/Aframax tankers (113,300 dwt each) at Hengli’s Dalian yard, scheduled for delivery in late 2028 and early 2029.
Broader new‑building programme
With the four containerships, Thenamaris now has 19 vessels under construction across its portfolio, comprising:
- 12 tankers
- 3 VLCCs of 90,000 cu m capacity
- 4 containerships (the newly ordered units)
These projects reflect the group’s diversified approach, balancing dry‑bulk, tanker, and container segments to mitigate market volatility.
Industry context
The decision to return to boxship construction arrives at a time when global trade lanes are re‑balancing after recent disruptions. Mid‑size vessels (3,000‑4,000 TEU) are increasingly favoured for regional routes and for ports with size constraints, a niche that aligns well with Thenamaris’ operational model.
By securing modern, environmentally‑compliant ships equipped with shore‑power and scrubber systems, Thenamaris also demonstrates its commitment to meeting upcoming IMO emissions regulations.
