Transpetrol Linked to $230M Ammonia-Ready Carrier Order in Korea

The global shift toward sustainable energy continues to reshape order books at major shipyards. In the latest industry development, Belgian shipowner Transpetrol has been identified as the party behind a significant new order for two LPG carriers at South Korea’s HD Hyundai Samho.

Strategic Investment in Clean Energy Transport

The contract, valued at approximately KRW 340.2 billion (USD 230.7 million), was officially announced by HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE). While the parent group initially categorized the client as an undisclosed European shipping entity, seasoned industry sources have confirmed Transpetrol’s involvement.

These vessels are not standard LPG carriers; they are large gas carriers specifically engineered to transport ammonia. This design choice reflects a broader maritime trend, as ammonia gains traction both as a zero-carbon marine fuel and as an efficient carrier for hydrogen, a cornerstone of the global energy transition.

A Partnership Built on Reliability

This latest deal reinforces the enduring relationship between the Belgian shipowner and the HD Hyundai group. Transpetrol’s history with the South Korean shipbuilder spans over a decade, including:

  • Major orders for Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs) placed at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in 2014.
  • Consistent fleet renewal programs leveraging Hyundai’s advanced engineering and construction facilities.
  • A recent expansion into the tanker sector via Hyundai Vietnam Shipbuilding.

Expanding Fleet Capabilities

Beyond its gas transport interests, Transpetrol has been aggressively modernizing its liquid bulk fleet. The company recently contracted for four 115,000 dwt LR2 product tankers. With deliveries scheduled or already completed this year, these additions bolster a fleet that has grown significantly over the company's 30-year history.

Currently, Transpetrol manages a diverse portfolio of approximately 15 vessels, ranging from medium-range tankers to high-capacity VLGCs. By securing these new ammonia-ready carriers, the company positions itself to meet the future demands of the green energy corridor, ensuring long-term operational relevance in a decarbonizing market.
