TS Lines Bolsters Fleet with $168M Containership Order at Fujian Mawei

Taiwanese ocean carrier TS Lines is significantly bolstering its regional presence with a newly finalized order for four 2,900 TEU containerships. The deal, signed with China’s Fujian Mawei Shipyard, is valued at approximately $168.6 million and marks a strategic move to modernize the company’s intra-Asia service capabilities.

Strengthening the Feedership Fleet

The Hong Kong-listed operator, currently ranked 20th in global carrier standings, has scheduled the delivery of these four firm vessels for May 2029. This latest contract builds upon a previous agreement signed in late 2025 for two identical hulls, bringing the company’s total commitment for this specific vessel class at Fujian Mawei to six units.

This expansion is part of a broader fleet renewal strategy designed to maintain competitive advantages in the high-frequency intra-Asia trade lanes. By investing in mid-sized feeder vessels, TS Lines aims to optimize operational efficiency and lower the average age of its existing fleet of approximately 40 ships.

A Long-Standing Partnership

The relationship between TS Lines and Fujian Mawei Shipyard has been highly productive since 2021. The partnership reached a major milestone in early 2024 with the successful delivery of a comprehensive series of vessels, which included:

  • Eight 1,100 TEU regional feeder ships
  • Six 2,900 TEU containerships

At the time of the original contract, this represented the largest containership project ever managed by the Fujian Mawei facility. The consistent return to the same yard highlights TS Lines' confidence in the builder’s quality and delivery timelines.

Future-Proofing Through Diversity

Beyond the 2,900 TEU series, TS Lines is diversifying its orderbook to include larger tonnage. The carrier has a separate shipbuilding program underway at Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding, where it is constructing vessels in the 5,000 to 5,300 TEU range. These larger ships are slated for delivery throughout 2028 and 2029, signaling the carrier’s intention to scale its operations and potentially explore longer regional loops or hub-and-spoke connections.

As the maritime industry faces evolving environmental regulations and fluctuating trade volumes, this multi-billion dollar investment plan underscores TS Lines’ commitment to maintaining a modern, efficient, and flexible fleet tailored for the demands of the next decade.
